Best Cccam Compatible Satellite Receivers

Today I’m going to share with you a list of the best Enigma2 powered cccam compatible satellite receivers. These powerful Enigma2 based set top boxes are getting more and more popular and the freedom they offer for the user is invaluable! This is not just another box like the ones offered by Sky UK with all these limits and extra paid features, you probably have or had one at home. This is next generation stuff and for the last couple of years Enigma2 based boxes dominated the satellite receivers market. We’re going to look at Vu+ Duo, Solo 2 and Solo 4k. So, let’s start!

UPDATE August 2017: Added link to all VU+ family User Manuals and PDF version of Vu+ boxes comparison table.

1. VU+ DUO 2

VU+ DUO 2 - Cccam Compatible Linux Based Satellite Receiver

This is the most popular linux based cccam compatible satellite receiver on the market. Running on Enigma2 this powerful box can do magic for you. With the dual core CPU 1.3 GHz (MIPS based), the speed of operating functions is faster than you ever imagined.

Vu+ Duo2 is slightly different to the Solo2 when you look at the box specs. The VU+ Duo2 is equipped with 2 tuner slots and you have the choice of which tuners you want to install. This satellite receiver works very well with the latest Cccam and Newcamd, either as a server or as a peer.

Possible config options:

  • DVB-S2 + DVB-S2
  • DVB-S2 + DVB-C/T
  • DVB-S2 Dual + DVB-C/T
  • DVB-S2 Dual + DVB-S2 Dual
  • DVB-C/T + DVB-C/T

You can have a maximum of 4 DVB-S2 tuners by using 2 DVB-S2 dual tuner modules.

There is an option for external USB tuners on the VU+ Duo2. USB is for the moment the only way to have DVB-T2 tuners as there is no DVB-T2 tuner module available from VU+ yet. That’s sad but to my knowledge it is in the works.

Key Specs on the Vu+ Duo 2:

  • 1300 MHz CPU BCM7424 dual-threaded
  • 1GB Flash / 2GB DDR3 DRAM
  • Option to fit Internal SATA HDD 2.5 or 3″
  • Dual Card readers
  • 2 x Front display (VFD and LCD)
  • GigaBit Ethernet
  • HDMI 1.4
  • Dolby Digital Plus & DTS 2.0 supported
  • Dual MPEG2/H.264 Hardware Decoding (HD PiP possible)
  • On-the-fly hardware transcoding of content into a variety of formats (support transcoding bit/frame rate change)

  • Download the VU+ Duo2 image you want to install on your PC.
  • Unzip to a USB stick(FAT32)
  • Turn off the VU+ Duo2 on the back
  • Insert the USB stick on the front of the Duo2
  • Turn on the VU+ Duo2
  • Follow the messages on the front display of the Duo2.
  • Press the power button to install
  • The Duo2 installs the image from the usb and reboots.

Compared to the VU+ Solo2 there are many improvements or added options if you need them. Of course we now have the pluggable tuners and also an increase on memory specs and the WiFi is built in. The addition of 3.2” TFT LCD 262,000 colour front panel display also sets the Duo2 apart. Also worth noting that the Duo2 has dedicated hardware in the box for transcoding whereas the Solo2 is software based.

Vu+ Duo 2 Summary

It really stands out from the rest of the crowded Enigma2 based boxes market.

The Duo2 has more options than the Solo2 with its pluggable tuner slots and it just feels more high-end.

The Vu+ Duo2 is the fastest Enigma2 cccam compatible receiver I’ve seen as of yet and that comes as no surprise if I look at the strong specs of this receiver. The transcoding feature is better on the Duo2 than on the Solo2 and the LCD display looks nice and clear and is very easy to customise. Overall very good cccam compatible and linux based satellite receiver and highly recommended. Probably the best for the price at the moment on the market. If you’re going to spend some and upgrade your old box, try to grab a deal here.

2. Vu+ Solo 2

Vu+ Solo 2 - Cccam Compatible Linux Based Satellite ReceiverVu+ Solo2 is a twin tuner receiver. It comes equipped with 2 x  DVB-S2 tuners. These are not pluggable tuners so you cannot put in DVB-T/C tuners in the Solo2. There is an option to use external USB tuners on the Solo2.

Key Specs on the Vu+ Solo 2:

  • 1300 MHz CPU BCM7356 dual core
  • 256MB Flash / 1GB DDR3 DRAM
  • Option to fit Internal SATA HDD 2.5″
  • Dual Card readers
  • Front Display 12 digit VFD display
  • GigaBit Ethernet
  • HDMI 1.4
  • Dolby Digital Plus & DTS 2.0 supported
  • Dual MPEG2/H.264 Hardware Decoding (HD PiP possible)

  • Follow the messages on the front display of the Solo2.
  • Touch sensitive standby button to update
  • The Solo2 installs the image from the usb and reboots.

Vu+ Solo 2 Summary

The Vu+ Solo2 really delivers on many points.  The receiver seems stable even at this early stage and it will be interesting to follow the transcoding function developing more in the coming months. The Solo2 has impressed me much with its fast booting and channel zapping and it is already widely supported by many Image teams(BlackHole, Vix, OpenPli).  The Gigabit Ethernet and Hbb-TV support works straight away without any problems. If you are in the market for the very fast twin tuner cccam compatible satellite receiver then look no further than the VU+ Solo2.

3. Vu+ Solo 4k

  • Turn on the VU+ Solo 4k
  • Follow the messages on the front display of the Solo 4k
  • Touch sensitive standby button to update
  • The Solo 4k installs the image from the usb and reboots.

Vu+ Solo 4k Summary

The Vu+ Solo 4K is for sure an upgrade over the Vu+ Duo 2 in many aspects.  The support for Ultra HD tv channels is the most noticeable but also general speed, picture quality and the FBC technology provide a tempting incentive to upgrade. The Solo 4K still have some room for improvements like transcoding and as of yet the number of UHD channels and 4k materials are very limited. The sad news is that 3.5″ drives are no longer supported but with the detachable solution VU+ Solo 4k has chosen it was to be expected.

If you already haveVu+ Duo2 and unless you really want to watch the UHD channels that are availble now then I would recommend you to wait some time. If you want to be up to date with the latest trends in satellite world and want the latest and greatest right now then there is no better cccam compatible receiver than the VU+ Solo 4K.

What is a DVB-S2 FBC Twin Tuner?
Vu+ Ultimo 4k introduces big change in the market comparing to the previous Enigma2 boxes from Vu+ family boxes. The DVB-S2 FBC(Full Band Capture) Twin Tuner has 8 demodulators.
For two conventional (e.g., twin LNB) satellite feeds, the tuner is comparable to two conventional and 6 additional tuners operating in the loop mode. This allows you to watch, stream, or record tv or radio channels from 8 different transponders and from two different satellites simultaneously. This is great news for any satellite freak or feed hunter.
In SCR mode (Unicable) with 8 frequencies, this corresponds to 8 conventional tuners.

What is a DVB-C FBC tuner?
A DVB-C FBC tuner has 8 demodulators. This corresponds to a receiver with 8 conventional DVB-C tuners.
You can view, stream, or record 8 stations at the same time. Basically the same as DVB-S2.

Conclusion
